Study: Taking Multivitamins & Calcium Supplements May Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Woman Smiling

A recently published study by researchers at the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico shows that dietary supplementation of calcium and other vitamins may significantly reduce the risk of women developing breast cancer. If the researchers are correct, this seemingly simple information could help save countless women from the potentially disfiguring and deadly disease.

By comparing the case histories of 268 women with documented malignant breast tumors with those of 457 healthy, unaffected controls, the research team was able to calculate a potential 30 percent reduction in cancer rates with proper supplementation.

How Does Calcium Help Lower the Risk of Breast Cancer?

We might not often think of it as such, but technically speaking, the mineral calcium is an alkaline earth metal. In fact, it's one of the most abundant metals on the planet. It's also a necessary component of the cellular physiology of virtually every complex organism known to man. Without it, the intracellular communication required for countless biological processes would be severely hampered or altogether impossible.

According to Dr. Jamie Matta, head of the research team responsible for the study, their findings relating to calcium's role in reducing the risk of breast cancer most likely stem from its ability to help facilitate the complex process of DNA repair within the human body. More than 200 unique proteins are required to properly maintain the integrity of these genetic repair processes, and unless these proteins are readily available, unfortunate changes can occur within the body. While these changes may be minor at first, over time, they can snowball into malignancies such as breast and other forms of life-threatening cancer.

The combination of a standalone dietary calcium supplement along with a quality multivitamin is a great way to ensure that your body has all the minerals and nutrients it needs to maintain itself.

The Importance of Good Nutrition

Researchers also stress the importance of proper dietary nutrition as a preventative measure against the formation of breast cancer. A diet rich in assorted organic fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy oils such as organic olive oil, raw coconut oil and flaxseed oil can make a huge difference in the human body's ability to maintain health at the genetic level. And don't forget to consume calcium-rich foods for added health benefits.
